Dermal Fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. Millions of these procedures are performed every day and they have become more popular than traditional cosmetic surgery to achieve results in a much less invasive way. There are a few different types of dermal fillers offered at S. Thetics Medspa, so there are always questions about the differences between the different formulas and which one is best suited for individual concerns.
At S. Thetics, we like to provide as much information as possible to our community, whether you are a Lawrence, Kansas local, or visiting from across the globe!
For someone that is new to the world of dermal fillers, it can be overwhelming once you begin to research. So, to start off, let’s talk about what dermal fillers are used for. Most commonly, dermal fillers are used to plump and lift the skin. Once injected, these fillers will rebuild collagen that has been lost over time. It is natural for skin to lose collagen as we age, which is why we begin to see skin laxity and fine lines and wrinkles around our face and neck as we get older. We also lose bone density as we age.
To put it simply, dermal fillers fill depressions in the skin to smooth out texture and restore volume. Dermal fillers are most commonly used in areas where wrinkles or folds are more pronounced in the skin and in the hollow areas below the eyes. Dermal fillers are also commonly used to enhance areas of the face, such as the lips, jawline, and chin to make them fuller and more pronounced, as they once were in our youth.
Something that is commonly mistaken for dermal fillers is Botox.
However, Botox and Dermal Fillers are two completely different treatments with different results.
There are two different kinds of wrinkles, dynamic wrinkles, and static wrinkles. We also offer Botox and Dysport at S. Thetics for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles caused by facial movements, squinting, smiling, or furrowing of the brows. Botox and Dysport are used to smooth existing lines caused by movement and as a preventative treatment to inhibit deeper lines from forming. Botox and Dysport work by temporarily blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles where they are injected. By doing this, the muscles cannot contract, which relaxes and softens wrinkles in the area injected. When the muscles in the face are not contracted, wrinkles are not likely to form. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, have no effect on the muscle. Dermal Fillers are used on static wrinkles, which are caused by the natural aging process. Aging naturally results in the breakdown of collagen and elastin. These static lines are formed regardless of muscle action. Dermal fillers are made of acids, most commonly hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body, but depletes as we age. Dermal fillers add volume and smooth lines and areas that have become hollow.
We offer multiple types of Dermal Fillers at S. Thetics.
Some of the most popular include Restylane and the entire Galderma group of dermal fillers, including Sculptra and the RHA Collection by Revance, an exclusive line of dermal fillers to the United States and S. Thetics from Europe. These fillers are made of a natural substance called hyaluronic acid. This is a chemical found in the body that helps increase the production of collagen and elastin and boosts elasticity. When you come to S. Thetics, our team of trained nurse injectors will listen to you and assess your concerns to determine which option is best for you, depending on your desired outcome. Dermal fillers are meant to be very versatile and tailored to each individual. They are definitely not one size fits all!
Something that can be daunting to someone that has never gotten dermal fillers is the injection process. Any time there is a needle involved, people tend to ask about the pain level and whether it is worth the pain. At S. Thetics, we make the procedure as comfortable as possible for our patients. When you come in for a dermal filler appointment at S. Thetics, we always start off by applying a topical, pharmaceutical compounded numbing cream to numb the area. This helps to significantly reduce any discomfort caused during the injection process. Once the area is numb, the injections begin. Most dermal fillers also contain lidocaine, which will keep you comfortable throughout your treatment as well. The duration of this process will differ for everyone and will depend on the area or areas being treated, but most appointments take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour from start to finish.
One of the many benefits of dermal fillers is that there is no downtime following the injections. Once the injections are complete, you can leave the office and resume life as usual. However, swelling is common, especially within the first few days. At S. Thetics, we recommend using cold compresses following your procedure to reduce swelling. You may also experience mild bruising at the injection sites. This is also completely normal, and any bruising will typically fade within the first few days. S. Thetics also carries an excellent product by Alastin that helps prevent and minimize swelling or bruising. The results from dermal fillers can be seen immediately but can sometimes seem more drastic immediately after the injections due to swelling. Within 2 - 5 days, depending on the person and how much filler was used, any swelling and bruising will be healed, and you will be able to see your end result.
Like many aesthetic treatments, dermal fillers require maintenance to do just that…. maintain the results you originally sought and that were achieved from your initial treatment(s). Dermal filler WILL dissolve naturally and completely on its own if you let it. Everyone’s body metabolizes the hyaluronic acid from dermal fillers differently. Typically, dermal filler treatments should be repeated every 6 to 18 months. Besides how your own body breaks down filler, its longevity also depends on what filler was used by your nurse injector and in what area of the face it was injected. Some dermal fillers have much more "staying power" than others and some dermal fillers dissolve much faster in some areas of the face than others. For instance, around the mouth (perioral lines or thinning lips). Typically dermal filler is used on those pesky vertical lines around the mouth, and also to fill in or enhance the lips. Because we use our mouths so much every day to talk, eat, chew and drink, especially when puckering up using straws, the dermal filler will break down and dissolve in this area faster than it would in the mid-face area, where dermal filler may have been used to restore volume lost in the cheek area due to natural bone loss. The cheek area does not naturally move as much as the area around the mouth. Therefore, dermal filler can last up to 18 months and sometimes longer in the mid-face. Some dermal fillers have a two-year indication and we have definitely seen this in our patients. So yes, just like many other aesthetic treatments, regular upkeep is required because no treatment can stop the natural aging process.
Even with the use of anti-aging and preventative practices, time will inevitably march on... right across our face as we like to say at S. Thetics! We are always very upfront and honest with all of our patients at S. Thetics Medspa & Wellbeing. Dermal filler, along with other common anti-aging treatments are never one-and-done procedures and do require general upkeep. By rebuilding collagen and slowing down the aging process over time, these treatments and procedures aid in achieving and preserving a naturally youthful, healthy appearance.

Thetics, we recommend consulting with one of our expert nurse injectors to thoroughly go over the treatment, along with a few pre and post-care dos and don’ts to make your experience as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Laser Hair Removal
Ditch Your Razors for Lasers and Get Silky Smooth Skin for Summer!
Ditch Your Razors for Lasers and Get Silky Smooth Skin for Summer!
Summer is right around the corner,
which means it is time to start digging out the bikinis from the back of the dresser drawer and getting summer ready! The days of staying indoors bundled up in front of the TV will soon hopefully be replaced with hours of being outdoors enjoying your favorite activities and wearing more skin baring clothing.
The question is, is your skin ready for the change of seasons? Sure, you’ve been staying up to date on your regular facials, skin treatments, and other body treatments at S. Thetics Medspa & Wellbeing, using all of your daily and nightly professional skincare products and applying your daily SPF every morning, but what about the rest of your body?
that may have been overlooked with all your time spent indoors during the colder winter months!
One of the most popular treatments offered at S. Thetics Medspa and Wellbeing in Lawrence, Kansas as summer approaches is Laser Hair Removal.
Although body hair is completely natural, many people choose to remove it for different reasons. For most, hair removal is done for aesthetic reasons and personal preference, but it can also help with irritation and reducing ingrown hairs. As with any treatment, there are many questions that come along with Laser Hair Removal. Is it right for you?
Are you a good candidate for the procedure? Here at S. Thetics, we are here to get you in the know about all things laser hair removal-related.
The question is valid, of course, but there is no one simple answer to why so many people choose Laser Hair Removal because there are many benefits, starting with long-lasting hair reduction and removal achieved from the procedure compared to traditional shaving or waxing. Laser Hair Removal does not remove hair in the same way that waxing or traditional shaving does, making the results longer lasting, rather than just a temporary solution. Shaving with a razor simply trims the hairs that have only grown past the surface of the skin.
It is a great short-term solution for unwanted hair, but the hair tends to grow back very quickly, requiring shaving multiple times per week to maintain smooth skin. Waxing, on the other hand, removes hair from the root, rather than just trimming the hair at the surface. This method does help with keeping unwanted hair away for longer than traditional shaving, but it is not the best alternative for many reasons, including cost, discomfort, and the most common side effect of unwanted and sometimes painful ingrown hairs that waxing leaves behind.
On average, the hair will start to grow back within a couple of weeks. Laser hair removal is favored over these methods because it is a much longer-lasting solution to unwanted hair. Laser Hair Removal targets the hair follicle, inhibiting future hair growth, so the hair does not come back once the initial series of treatments have been completed. Subsequent single maintenance treatments are later recommended to keep the hair from returning.
Another common question that comes along with laser hair removal is how safe is it?
At S. Thetics, we take our patients’ safety very seriously, and would never offer a procedure that is not safe and effective. Laser Hair Removal is an FDA-approved process that safely and effectively reduces or eliminates unwanted hair on almost any part of the body. The hair removal process is quick and simple and uses a laser to target the follicle of the hair. The laser deposits heat & light to the base of the follicle, which damages the growth center of the hair. Once the follicle is damaged, it will no longer grow hair, resulting in smooth, silky skin!
With summer quickly approaching, you’re probably wondering
Laser Hair Removal treatments are relatively quick, depending on the area being treated, and you will start seeing results after just one treatment and keep seeing a reduction of hair after each treatment of your initial series. For optimal results, we recommend 4-8 treatment sessions, which will be determined by your Laser Hair Removal specialist depending on your hair and skin type and the area being treated. There is no downtime with laser hair removal, and you can shave any unwanted hair that can grow between treatments. Once your treatments are complete, you can ditch the razors and enjoy your smooth, hairless skin!
Another great thing about Laser Hair Removal is that it can be performed on anyone and everyone! It is a great way to remove unwanted hair on both men and women on just about any area of the body, aside from the sensitive area of skin around the eyes.
Some of the most common areas that we treat at S. Thetics Medspa and Wellbeing are legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, Brazilian, face, back, and chest. However, other areas can be treated as well. If you deal with unwanted hair on another area of your body, you can consult with one of our team members to see if you are a candidate for laser hair removal.

Morpheus8 at S. Thetics Medspa & Wellbeing
Let’s learn about Morpheus8 at S.Thetics Med Spa
Let’s face it
aging is inevitable.
There is no magic potion or genie in a bottle that is going to turn back the hands of time and stop us from getting older. However, aging seems to come with such a negative connotation, even though it is something natural we all go through. In the beauty and wellbeing industry, the downside of aging that comes up constantly is the change in our appearance as we age. Once people reach a certain age, they begin to see lines and spots where they never saw them in their twenties or skin that is not as tight as it once was. While all of this is completely normal, it can have an impact on self-confidence.
For years, men and women have gone under the knife for procedures designed to make them look more youthful. Many of these procedures are invasive and require extended periods of recovery time. Recently, however, advancements in technology have paved the way for much less invasive treatments that offer incredible results with a fraction of the recovery time. Rather than anesthesia, scalpels, stitches and lengthy, painful downtimes, Med Spas like S. Thetics can use light technology and minimally invasive techniques with devices that deliver the same surgical-like results…
Here at S. Thetics, we strive to stay educated on the newest technologies in skincare and wellbeing. We are extremely excited to now offer Morpheus8, a minimally invasive body and face contouring treatment!
The launch of new treatments and technologies always comes with a lot of questions, and clients wonder whether a treatment is right for them or not.
The S. Thetics team is always here to assist with any personal concerns or questions about treatments and we love educating our clients and patients, so we are here to tell you all about our newest treatment, Morpheus8!
Morpheus8 is a safe and effective device that simultaneously combines the power of microneedling and radiofrequency energy to remodel and contour the face and body. This treatment is minimally invasive and requires little to no downtime for recovery, which makes it a great option for a wide range of patients who don’t have days or weeks to be “down.” The technology works by penetrating deeper into the layers of the dermis below the surface of the skin. The device penetrates the sub-dermal tissue and stimulates collagen production. By targeting the deeper layers of the skin, Morpheus8 can remodel the tissues of the face and body, to reveal a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Morheus8 is designed to treat the finest of lines to the deepest of wrinkles as well as more skin laxity, sagging skin, jowls and necks and overall crepey, compromised or sun damaged skin.
Morpheus8 is a versatile treatment that can be used on many areas of the skin. Some of the most popular areas to treat include the face, neck, chest, abdomen, legs, arms, even stubborn stretch marks and unwanted scars, and many other areas as well. Morpheus8 is the perfect treatment for any areas of the skin that could benefit from deeper resurfacing and rejuvenation. If you have any specific concerns to address, speak with one of our S. Thetics team members and we would be happy to offer more information about areas of treatment!
Everyone’s skin is different, so it is valid to wonder if Morpheus8 is suitable for you. The good news is, the treatment is suitable for all skin types! The technology behind this treatment utilizes microneedles that emit radiofrequency energy simultaneously into the dermis. It is safe for all skin tones and types. Adjustments can also be made by your S. Thetics skincare professional to cater the treatment to your skin’s specific and unique needs. Everyone’s Morpheus8 treatment plan looks different based on each individual's concerns.
Of course, you are wondering what the results will be like and how long will it take to see them. When it comes to results, it depends on the individual area being treated and the overall objective of the treatment. In most cases, visible improvements from Morpheus8 treatments may be seen within a few days, but will be most noticeable after about a month and will only continue to improve for the next 4 - 6 months as collagen continues to regenerate. Optimal results are often obtained from multiple sessions over time. The number and frequency of treatments will be determined by your skincare provider at S.Thetics Medspa & Wellbeing to obtain the optimal results for each patient.
Due to the minimally invasive nature of the Morpheus8, proper aftercare is minimal and simple, yet imperative for the best Morpheus8 results. It is recommended that patients do not apply makeup until 1-2 days after treatment to avoid any kind of irritation. If that is not possible, mineral-based makeup is best. It is very normal to have some degree of swelling for a few hours and, on rare occasions, up to a few days following the treatment, along with slight redness similar to a sunburn, depending on the treatment area. Bruising can occur and is most common around the delicate, thin skin around the eyes. These are all minimal and, in most cases, do not last long.
To aid in these common occurrences, specific products will be applied immediately after your Morpheus8 treatment that is also in the post-care product kit you will be given to take home with you. All of these products help with the healing process and enhance your Morpheus8 results. Each kit includes a gentle yet effective medical-grade cleanser, rich healing serum, an appropriate moisturizer, and medical-grade SPF to apply daily. Your S. Thetics skincare provider will also provide you with simple and effective aftercare instructions before leaving the Medspa.
S.Thetics: 10 Years in the Making
It all begins with an idea.
It’s true when they say,
‘time flies when you’re having fun,’
but looking back on the past decade I have seen a pipedream flourish into a reality, and it is unbelievable to see how far S. Thetics has come. The growth of our incredible team of expert providers and support staff, our vision, the services we provide, and the beauty and wellbeing industry has been monumental over the past ten years. When I look back at our humble beginnings, I remember opening the doors in 2012 with a small team of 5, thinking our 2500 square foot space was massive! Since then, we have expanded to over 5000 square feet, doubled the number of treatment rooms, and tripled the size of our team! It turns out, a full-service medical spa was exactly what Lawrence, Kansas was missing.
What many people do not realize is that I did not start this journey after college or when I was in my twenties. I did not grow up with the dream of opening my own med spa, in fact, I did not even realize it was an option! I was a stay-at-home mom until my late thirties when I went back to school to officially obtain my esthetics license. Even at that point, I figured it would be a part-time job I could go to a few times a week that had a flexible schedule. I guess it’s safe to say I was wrong! I ended up finding my passion at the age of 39 and I haven’t looked back since!
When we opened in 2012, we were the first premier full-service medical spa in Lawrence.
All I knew was that I wanted to share my passion and knowledge of skincare with others, and I wanted to be different from other med spas in the industry. You can get a facial anywhere, so what was going to set us apart from other spas?
For me, it all came down to the experience. It has never been about selling skincare and making a profit from people with skin or body concerns and insecurities.
It has always been about educating clients and patients about their skin and staying up to date on all the newest skin and body rejuvenation advancements to ensure we are offering the best treatments available.
